AI-Based OCR App: Capture, Extract, and Summarize Text

This post introduces an AI-powered OCR (Optical Character Recognition) app that extracts text from images and summarizes it in Korean.

How to Use the App

 1. Capturing an Image

- On the app’s start screen, tap the '촬영하기' button to activate the camera function.

 2. Extracting Text from an Image

- After taking a picture, review the captured image and tap 'Use Photo'.

- The app will then extract the text from the image and display it on the screen.

3. Summarizing the Text

- Tap the '요약' button to view a concise summary of the extracted text.

- Regardless of the original language, the summary is always provided in Korean.

Thoughts on Development

While developing this app, I focused primarily on ensuring accurate text extraction and natural summarization.

OCR technology is more complex than expected; factors like poor lighting or unique fonts can reduce accuracy. To improve this, I conducted multiple tests. Similarly, the summarization feature was designed not just to shorten text but to quickly convey the essential content.

Where Can This Be Useful?

This app can be useful in various fields:

- Students: Quickly summarizing key content from lecture notes or books

- Professionals: Extracting key points from meeting notes or contracts

- Researchers: Analyzing academic papers and reports

- General Users: Instantly reading newspaper articles, notices, or signs

Of course, the app is not perfect, but from my experience, the process of extracting and summarizing text has proven to be quite convenient. Moving forward, I plan to continue improving its features and developing a more advanced version.
